Reliant Energy pros and cons

Like any electricity provider, Reliant Energy has its advantages and disadvantages. As you shop for plans on our marketplace, it helps to understand the various pros and cons. Here’s what to consider before signing up for a plan from Reliant Energy:

Pros

  • 90-day satisfaction guarantee: Reliant Energy’s satisfaction guarantee is more generous than many of its competitors. If you’re unhappy with your plan, Reliant lets you switch within 90 days of enrollment without an additional charge.
  • Bill credits and discount options: Many of the provider’s plans include bill credits when you use a certain amount of energy in a month. There are options for both low- and high-usage households, creating savings opportunities for different types of customers.

Cons

  • Few term length options: Although Reliant Energy offers several types of fixed-rate plans on our marketplace, they’re only available in one- or two-year contracts. If you’re looking for a shorter or longer contract, submit your ZIP code on this page and explore options from other energy providers.
  • Low renewable energy content: In Texas, all electricity plans include at least some renewable content. Currently, the statewide average for renewable content is 33%, but Reliant Energy’s plans are only 24% renewable. If you want to minimize your carbon footprint, Reliant may not be the best provider for you.

Contact Reliant Energy’s customer service

You can choose your own electricity provider if you live in a deregulated energy market. Electricity providers sell energy plans, track electricity usage, and manage customer billing. If you’re a Reliant Energy customer, here’s how to reach the provider:

Meanwhile, your utility company, which is assigned based on where you live, delivers power to your home and restores electricity after an outage. If your power goes out, be sure to call your utility company, not Reliant Energy.

Reliant Energy frequently asked questions

Is Reliant a “good” energy company?

Reliant Energy is generally trusted by electricity customers in Texas. Texas Electric Rates rated the company 4.3 out of 5 stars due to its online accessibility, solid business history, and good complaint record with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). Reliant is also recognized for its top-notch customer service, user-friendly website, and variety of plans.

Does Reliant Energy charge a cancellation fee?

Reliant Energy’s 90-day satisfaction guarantee lets you change plans within 90 days of enrollment (without paying a fee). After that, the provider’s fixed-rate plans include a cancellation fee, also referred to as an early termination fee (ETF), if you cancel or switch providers before your contract term ends. The fee is $150 for 12-month plans and $295 for 24-month plans. You won’t have to pay an ETF if you move out of Reliant’s service area.

Do I need to pay a deposit for Reliant Energy?

If you have a low credit score, Reliant Energy (and most other Texas energy providers) will require a deposit. When you sign up for a plan through Texas Electric Rates, we’ll run a soft credit check to determine whether your score is high enough to waive the deposit. Don’t worry — this won’t impact your credit score. However, if you’d rather avoid the credit check and deposit, you can enter your ZIP code on our marketplace and choose the “all credit approved” filter to find no-deposit plans.
